Arcadia Management Area

Arcadia

Exeter RI

Acadia Management Area Description:
At over 14,000 mostly forested acres, the Arcadia Management Area is the state’s largest recreational area, offering users a great variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Co-managed by DEM’s Divisions of Forest Environment and Fish & Wildlife, it is promoted as actively managed for hunting, as well as fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, to name a few activities. “Multiple use” management principles apply, assuring a safe and satisfying experience for hunters and non-hunters alike. Miles upon miles of gravel roads and well-marked and maintained trails entice hikers to return to a different section each visit. These same trails are often used by mountain bikers or horseback riders so all users need to act responsibly, show courtesy, and “share the road”.

Big River Management

Big River

West Greenwich RI

Big River Management Area Description: is a large tract (8600 acres) of land governed by the Water Resources Board and located mainly in West Greenwich near exits 6, 6a & 7 along interstate 95 (south side of the highway from Amgen). It was acquired to build a reservoir many years ago but the project was never really started. Currently, the north side (not shown in the maps below) is being considered for a good field to add to the local water system. The south side of BR and Carr Pond area hold a labyrinth of trails mostly made over decades by the motorcycles and interwoven with the old farmer and logging roads. Around every Earth Day over the past several years (a weekend in April) a sizable group of NEMBAites and other environmental minded groups get together to help clean some of the rubbish out of Big River. 2008 turned out 100 volunteers filling 8 dumpsters with mostly historic trash from old homesteads deep in the woods, abandoned cars, and tire dumps.

Burlingame

State Park

Burlingame

Charlestown RI

Burlingame State Park Description: Burlingame is located on Prosser Trail Rd just off of US Route 1 in Charlestown, RI. Free year-round parking is easy to find, and the trails are a short ride from the Picnic Area parking lot. Additionally, the adjoining Burlingame Campground is a well known and popular campground if you feel like staying over. The campground is open from April 15th until October 31st, every year. The park offers about 17 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails, some of which include parts of the North-South Trail. There is also a 5-mile loop of mostly double-track hills directly accessible on the north, in the Burlingame Management Area.
The 8-mile Yellow Dot Trail/Vin Gormley Trail (also the King of Burlingame race loop) winds around Watchaug Pond. The trail is accessed by riding either north or west out of the parking lot for about a mile up the road. It is the standard loop that most local riders know, and it is a fast-rolling loop with some short technical climbs and a few rock fields. While there are a good amount of roots showing, fast and smooth-rolling stretches dominate the scene. The skill level on the Wednesday evening ride there is advertised as “Advanced Beginner”, and that assessment is accurate, as long as you stay on that loop. It is a fun trail to get out on and hammer away. The rock fields are a challenge for most, but it is generally a fast loop that even the roadies ride on those frigid winter days. I love being able to keep up with them for a change!

Woody Hill

Woody Hill

Westerly RI

Woody Hill is the common name for four parcels of preserved land in Westerly, RI. The Woody Hill Management Area and Westerly Municipal Land Trust are the largest and the Westerly Land Trust and the Narragansett Indian Tribe being the others.

The area has a surprising amount of climbing being less than a mile from the ocean. This area is typical New England with ridgelines, beautiful forests, streams, and ponds. Trails were developed between 2017-2020 and are a mix of fun, fast beginner-friendly to very technical designed for advanced riders. The best thing about Woody Hill is there is something for everyone. See individual trail descriptions as needed.

A note about the trail names - each trail on the Townland is named after local craft beers. Beer is part of the mountain biking culture, so it seemed fitting, and to also promote local breweries. How it started was the builder was taking a lunch break on the first trail and was drinking a local DIPA called 'Captains Daughter' and thought that would be a great name for a trail, which led to every other trail being named after beers. It has been very well received by the community, and especially the named breweries.

The best place to park is at the Lacrosse Fields on Bradford Road. From there ride to the tree line at the back of the fields to the right and you'll see trails heading into the woods. Expect to climb, expect to encounter some very interesting trails, and expect to smile a lot.

Diamond Hill

Diamond Hill

Cumberland RI

Diamond Hill is one of the best riding areas in RI and possibly New England. There are two parts of the park. There is the town-owned ski hillside, which is the actual park, which consists of the pump track, some hiking trails/singletrack, and classic New England tech trails. On the other side are the harder "famous" flow trails with jumps and drops, including Rhody Flow, Rhody O, Chuck Norris, and Clyde Frog as well as the 10 mile XC loop.
